SLAP Repair

What is a SLAP Repair?

This surgery treats an injury in your shoulder. It repairs a tear of the labrum. That’s a ring of cartilage around the shoulder socket. The injury happens where the biceps tendon meets the labrum. We call this injury a “SLAP” tear.

Preparation for SLAP Tear Surgery

To begin, you are put to sleep. The surgeon makes a few small openings in your shoulder. One is for an arthroscope. That’s a small camera that sends live video to a monitor. The other openings are for surgical instruments.

Repair of a SLAP Tear

There are many ways to repair a SLAP tear. Your surgeon chooses the method that’s right for you. Your labrum may be trimmed. It can be secured with anchors and sutures. Your biceps tendon may need adjustments, too.

Recovery

When the surgery is done, the openings in your skin are closed and bandaged. You’re watched for a brief time, and then you can go home. You’ll wear a sling as your shoulder heals. Your healthcare provider will give you tips to help your recovery.
